The centre that keeps the town shopping dry
The Diamond Centre opened in 2002 and sits right on Bridge Street, in the pedestrianised heart of Coleraine — the covered stop that pulls the town's high-street names in under one roof. Its curved glass rotunda is one of the more recognisable buildings on the precinct, and the entrance still carries the plain "diamond centre" sign that generations of Coleraine shoppers have walked in under.
The name comes from the town itself. The old market square in the middle of Coleraine is said to be called the Diamond — a common name for the central square in Ulster towns — and the centre took its name from that, sitting a short step off it. It's worth knowing there are two Diamonds here: the historic open square, and this covered shopping centre nearby.
What it does well is simple. When the weather turns off the coast — and it does — this is a warm, dry, walk-everywhere place to get the shopping done, catch a coffee, and step straight back out onto the town precinct. At Christmas the centre turns over to a Santa's Grotto that draws families in from across the Causeway Coast, run to raise money for local rescue charities.
It earns its spot on a days-out map not as a destination in its own right, but as the easy, indoor anchor to a wider day in Coleraine — pair it with a walk along the River Bann, the run out to Portstewart Strand, or the short drive to Portrush and the coast.
